Tonight we have the Romeo Y Julieta Habana Reserve in Corona. This cigar comes in at 5 X 44. It has a medium brown wrapper with invisible seems and no visible veins. Just to note, I got this cigar while on vacation in Puerto Rico in November 2011. It has been ageing in my humidor since then. I have been on an aged cigar binge ever since I smoked the Tatuaje 2012 Cojonu. The cigar wasn’t very complex but it was smooth and delicious from the aging process. Anyways, at first light the cigar has that aged smoothness to it. It has a good amount of cedar and oak on the draw and the same flavors on the finish. The flavors leave the palate fairly quickly and is at a mild to medium it body. The draw is a bit snug but is producing adequate smoke out put. The burn is slightly wavy but not an issue.
About an inch in and the only flavors that I am picking up is still the cedar and oak on the draw and finish. There is no pepper flavor or zing to speak of. I think aging this one as long as I did might have done this cigar a disservice. The ones I have had in the past had a little more body and character to them. This one is midl to medium in body and hasn’t changed at all from first light. The draw is still slightly snug but not and issue and the burn as evened out and is doing quite well.
With around three inches left some flavor changes have started to happen. On the draw there is now a nice black pepper flavor and a little bit of a zing. The cedar and oak are also still present on the draw. The finish is a nice leather note and is rounded out by some more black pepper flavor but not the zing. The body is now up to a medium and is staying on my palate longer between draws. The burn has stayed consistent and so has the draw.
With two inches left I sat the cigar down for the last time at the 52 minute mark. The flavors started to get warm and bitter. This cigar overall was tasty but not what I was expecting from a three year aged cigar. Its interesting to see how the Tatuaje Cojonu was impoved by the age and this cigar was hindered a bit.
